Borrego Knows Best

We Won! Successful Campaign Against Rudyville

In the weeks leading up to the hearing, the Tubb Canyon Desert Conservancy’s (TCDC) ran a campaign on social media—Borrego Knows Best!. More than 33,000 voters in San Diego County viewed the Borrego Knows Best! video, more than 1500 individuals signed the petition that was delivered to each of the supervisors, and dozens RSVP’d to attend the hearing.

The odds were long. On the morning of the Board of Supervisors hearing, September 12th, the “word on the street” was that the fix was in and that Rudyville would go forward in some form or fashion.

However, once again Borregans showed up en masse and eloquently articulated one more time why Rudyville was worse than a terrible idea. It was a threat to our community. When it came time to vote, the San Diego County Board of Supervisors acknowledged that Borrego Knows Best! (www.borregoknowsbest.com), and a majority of Supervisors voted to deny Rudyville’s request for increased zoning density—a request that would have decimated an ocotillo forest and would have put more demand on Borrego’s already overdrafted aquifer.

This victory was the culmination of 12 years of steady opposition by the people of Borrego Springs. It would not have happened without your constant support. Without your signatures on the petition, your emails, letters, and phone calls to the supervisors, your financial support, and your presence at the hearing, the well-connected land speculators would have had their way.

Thank you for all of your efforts to protect the natural beauty of the desert and to hold elected representatives accountable.

Together, we did it! Congratulations, Borrego Springs!
